Indonesian attacked for writing 'God doesn't exist'

By msnbc.com staff

PADANG, Indonesia -- A 30-year-old Indonesian civil servant who was viciously attacked by a mob after posting?on Facebook that "God doesn't exist" is now threatened with jail time for blasphemy.

?He has triggered unrest among local residents," Dharmasraya Police Chief Chairul Aziz told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

The man, identified as Alexander, was arrested Friday on charges of blasphemy for his writings on his Facebook page. He had created a Facebook fan page titled Ateis Minang (Minang Atheist)?and?gained more than 1,238 Facebook "likes" before it was taken down from the social network site, according to the Post.?

On his page,?Alexander?wrote about his Muslim?upbringing,?how he didn't believe in angels,?demons, heaven?or hell and how he stopped practicing his faith in 2008, according to media reports. He posted comments?regarding?the?Islamic faith, including "God doesn't exist" and "If God exists, why do bad things happen? There should only be good things if God is merciful."

Aziz said?Indonesia's Council of Ulema, the ruling Islamic?authority, charged?Alexander?with defiling Islam by using passages from the Quran to denounce God, The Telegraph reported on Friday.

If convicted of blasphemy, Alexander could face up to five years in?prison.

Dozens of residents in his hometown in Pulau Punjung, West Sumatra province, stormed into Alexander's office?on Wednesday and carried on their?heated?debate over religion, police said. Alexander was beaten, including by some of his colleagues.

Dharmasraya Regent Adi Gunawan told the Jakarta Post Alexander he has not taken any action to remove the man from his job on the planning board.

?I will await the legal process and decide later about his employment status,? Adi told the newspaper.

Gingrich Debates like an Impossible-to-Rid Horror Movie Character (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The latest debate between the remaining four GOP presidential candidates took place in Charleston, S.C., Thursday night, which aired live on CNN. In a unusual move, National Journal reported that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich released his tax returns at the start of the debate, which showed an income of about $3.1 million for 2010.

Debates are about memorable moments. Gingrich had the most Thursday night, showing just how crafty and resilient he is in prime time.

President Barack Obama should hope he doesn't have to face Gingrich in the general election because as fictional horror movies with several sequels have shown (e.g., "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Friday the 13th"), defeating the prime antagonists once and for all is near impossible. On the debate stage, facing Gingrich is like taking on "Freddy Krueger" and "Jason Voorhees".

The former House speaker showed that, under attack, he's no perceived Edmund Muskie, a 1972 Democratic presidential candidate who allegedly cried before the media while defending his wife and himself from attacks by a New Hampshire newspaper publisher, according to The Washington Post.

For in defending himself against a charge by his ex-wife Marianne Gingrich on "Nightline" that he asked for an open marriage, Gingrich reacted by instantly slamming moderator John King for bringing up such a question in the first place, which received a standing ovation from the audience, according to ABC News' The Blotter.

The former House speaker made one of the best tactical strikes against another candidate in debate history via releasing his tax returns to show up former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has yet to release his. Romney has been employing stall tactics over revealing his own tax returns, and said during the debate he wouldn't release them until April, as reported by CBS News' Political Hotsheet.

Furthermore, it was memorable witnessing Gingrich embracing former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's charge that he is grandiose, and then justifying his grandiosity by adding, "This is a grandiose country of big people doing big things," as reported by Politico.

No matter what gets tossed Gingrich's way on the debate stage, he not only takes it without faltering, but he rebuts any charge effortlessly without hesitation. If Obama gets to debate the former House speaker, it will be a series of rhetorical "A Nightmare on Elm Street" spectacles for the president.

(AP) ? The debate over Tim Tebow's worthiness as an NFL quarterback will undeniably continue in the offseason.

What's not in doubt is his status as the Denver Broncos' starter.

The team sought to curb the circus that's sure to surround Tebow over the next several months by declaring him the incumbent at a season-ending news conference on Monday.

"Well, I think Tim's earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp," Broncos boss John Elway declared at the beginning of a 40-minute news conference in which 24 of the 47 questions were about Tebow.

"I think he made some good strides this year," Elway said. "He obviously played very well against Pittsburgh and played very well in a lot of football games."

And exceedingly poorly in plenty of others.

That's why Elway, the Hall of Famer who rejoined the team a year ago as chief of football operations, has pledged to personally work with Tebow this offseason to polish his passing game and help him become a better quarterback.

He has a willing pupil in Tebow, who said his offseason goal was "to work pretty hard and try to get a lot better."

Elway said he wants to show Tebow what he learned, which was this: Mobility is great, but to compete for a championship, you have to become a pocket passer. That's what Elway learned late in his career, which he capped with successive Super Bowl titles after losing the big game three times.

"Hopefully, I can teach him what I learned over my 16-year career," Elway said, "to be able to tell him what I learned in Year 10, hopefully get that to him in year 3 or 4."

Tebow took over a 1-4 win-loss team in October and guided the Broncos to their first playoff berth since 2005. But the clunky dual-threat quarterback completed just 46.5 percent of his passes in the regular season and 40.4 percent in the playoffs while compiling an 8-5 overall record that included five second-half comebacks.

His 80-yard touchdown toss on the first play of overtime beat Pittsburgh in the wild-card round and capped his best performance as a pro. Then, he had the worst completion percentage ? 34 ? in a playoff game since 1998 in a 35-point loss at New England on Saturday.

Tebow's growth was stunted by the NFL lockout and Kyle Orton's status as the starter through training camp and the first month of the season. Despite winning seven of his first eight starts, the Broncos were unbalanced under Tebow. They had the league's best running game but were ranked 31st in the 32-team league in passing.

Broncos officials liked the way Tebow handled pressure. Elway said what he went through in his career in this quarterback-crazed city was nothing compared to what Tebow has to endure.

Elway said his scrutiny was mostly local, "but when you look at Tim Tebow, what he went through was nationally based or maybe even worldwide-based. I mean, you talk about people Tebowing outside the Eiffel Tower, you know, that kind of tells you."

Still, Elway said Tebow was unaffected by all the attention.

HTC EVO 3D: poof, no more Carrier IQ software

It's been exactly a month since we received word that Sprint was disabling Carrier IQ software installed on its carrier-branded devices, and this week we witnessed a firmware update on the HTC EVO 3D that quietly removes all traces of the tracking software completely. Neither company was forthcoming about this particular feature disappearing -- we have a hunch they're trying to keep the public from being reminded that CIQ ever happened -- but Android Authority discovered that both HTC IQAgent and IQRD were completely gone after the update. So add this to the list of the build's other performance enhancements, and here's to hoping that we'll start seeing a plethora of other devices getting similar releases.
